Keri Anderson: Artist Spotlight

There is so much talent in Worcester Mass, that deserving artists are occasionally under appreciated. One would think that a beautiful female singer songwriter who has been the center piece of many bands and sung backup on countless others would have outgrown Worcester and moved to a larger stage. She can switch from uplifting folk & gospel harmonies, to solo wailing heavy blues, to down & dirty soul & funk big band leader, to a passionate chanteuse. Sometimes on the same night!

The first time I saw her perform live was near the end of the Whalebone Farmhouse band. Keri & Rocky Kramm work together so well and their harmonies are magically. A blend of folk, gospel & soul played with acoustic bass and guitar.

When the Farmhouse broke up Keri became a free agent, singing spotlights at various clubs. I ran into her one night during the Dive Bar’s long running Thursday night series & she tore the house down with this Willie Dixon classic.

The Big Lonesome was formed w/ long time collaborator Rocky to showcase Keri’s vocal range. A jazzier ensamble was gathered to highlight Keri’s sultry side. The gospel influence still showed through as she covered jazz and blues standards,modern pop, and a collection of originals as gathered on her official release, a Live CD recorded at Nick’s.

Big Lonesome: “So Broken”

Many fans of Keri always wanted her to rock out harder. Initially she & Craig formed Sugar & the Cane Breakers as a 8 piece funk & soul revue covering tracks ‘plucked from crate-diggin’ archives’. Great critical response but such a large band is hard to maintain. Currently she has broken it down to a harder blues and soul four piece and is in the process of writing and recording a CD of originals from the Little Sugar band.
