James Keyes: Artist Spotlight.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing James Keyes perform countless times since moving to Worcester MA. One of the first times (July 2010) was at the Dive Bar opening for the Ten Foot Pole CatsSmokeStack and the Foothill Fury.  I was new to the scene & didn’t know anyone at the club, just soaking in the music & the craft beers. The two solo acts had played inside but the Polecats setup outdoors and James came up, introduced himself  & started chatting like we were old friends. Not about his music but about Worcester, about life.

Months later, he was performing at Vincent’s and I asked him about a song of his and how I thought it would be be cool to have a hard rock version of it. He said there already was one with his punk band the Numbskulls! Right up my alley, had to check this out!

Since I have known him he has released two CDs and is now putting the final touches on a third “The Middle”.  Played with Worcester’s bluegrass combo, the Farmers Union Players, organized an annual Sight & Sounds show at the Hotel Vernon & the 2 years running New England Bloody Roots Festival in addition to foot stomping & strumming each week all across New England.

His style of dark folk, traditional blues & front porch country takes you back to simpler times but the lyric story telling keep you engaged and coming back for more.
